Newbie - Connect multiple subnets on one LAN

We have a LAN (LAN 1) with statically assigned IP addresses. It is in
the 10.0.1.1-10.0.1.255 range, subnet 255.255.255.0
We have an ADTRAN Atlas 800 plus router which connects to another
ADTRAN Atlas 550 and another LAN. The second one is
10.0.3.1-10.0.3.255, subnet 255.255.255.0. This one is dynamically
assigned IP's.
LAN 1 only has 9 available IP's left, so we would like to split it into
2 subnets. Do we need additional equipment to do this? We have
switches at each building on this LAN (8 buildings.) They are all
connected to a windows 2000 server. We need both of the new subnets
(hopefully 10.0.1.x and 10.0.2.x) to speak to each other and the remote
10.0.3.x LAN.

From one blind person to another - I suggest getting another router and
another switch for the additional segment. (maybe you can unstack
switches you already have)
