I run Excel 98 for the Mac. While trying to open the Financia
Statements.xls file that I downloaded from Mr. Rubin's website,
encountered three consecutive error messages. Can someone please emai
me a version of the file that is compatible with my Excel 98 for th
Mac setup?

error message #1: "File error. Some number formats may have bee
lost."

error message #2: "This file has unicode characters that could not b
converted to the active codepage. Since some data has been lost, th
workbook has been marked read-only."

error message #3: "The application Microsoft Excel has unexpectedl
quit, because an error of type 2 has occurred. You should save you
work in other open applications and restart your computer.

Don't know anything about "Mr. Rubin's book" - you've posted to a
general newsgroup, not a proprietary forum (though ExcelForum looks that
way). You might want to send an email to Mr Rubin directly. For
questions specific to MacXL, you may want to post instead to the

OTOH, several things come to mind - not sure what formats would have
been included that are incompatible with XL98. As far as the Unicode in
the code pane, XL98 doesn't handle Unicode. XLv.X is not fully compliant
either, though it handles it better. Your Type 2 error is a memory error
in Classic/OS 9 - use the Get Info/Memory command to boost "preferred"
memory setting by 5 - 10 MB (leave the "minimum" setting alone).
