new word documents opening with columns can't get rid of them

I was attempting to put colums into a document and since then every time I
open a new word document it comes up with three colums have attempted to
remove the colums but nothing I do seems to work. I have restarted my
computer but this hasn't worked, I have also thought of removing word 2003
and reloading as a last resort if any body can help get my word documents
back to normal I would really appreciate it.

Locate and open your Normal.dot file as described in Method 1 in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm . Click
on Format | Columns | One | Apply to: Whole document | OK. Even
if "One" already appears to be selected, click on it anyway. Type
a character or two and delete what you just typed. Save the
Normal.dot file and close it.
