New Window Location

Problem: New windows open in same vertical position but
the horzontial position is a scroll bar width to the
right of the origional window. Naturally I want them
stacked, in the same location. All subsequent new windows
open in the same location. XP with SP2,laptop.
I have tried everthing I can find on this problem.
close all except new window, put window where I want it,
close with shift, control, both shift and control.
deleting the Window_Position in the registry.
creating a IE shortcut on the desktop that opens IE using
the -k switch.
There has to be another registry entry for the new window
location. Help!

Tried it all - no go. I even moved the taskbar to the
right and left side, open new windows, reposition
windows, move taskbar back to top, open IE, open new
window, still tiles to the right. Deleted ie
window_position from registry with all IE already off,
reboot, new window still tiles over.

Reposition (move/drag) such a window where you want it and how you want it
to appear. | Close all other windows but this repositioned window. | Now
close the repositioned window.

In trying to fix this that is what I do. I can open a new
window, close the parent window, resize and reposition
the child window, close it. When IE is restarted, it
opens in the last child location. Any link opened in a
new window is in the same vertical position and the
horizontal position is a scroll bar width to the right.
Every time.

If selecting a lower screen resolution (Control Panel > Display > Settings)
doesn't help, then I don't know what's wrong, Gary, unless you're seeing the
results of some sort of hijacking:

You might try posting to microsoft.public.windowsxp.general newsgroup for
other opinions and suggestions. Good luck.

Problem: New windows open in same vertical position but

That means they are too small for your screen size.
Make them bigger and they won't tile.
(That's why I make my normal windows smaller,
so they *will* tile both vertically and horizontally. <g>
I find it makes it much easier to find them again
or use them as targets for dragging, etc.)

However, if it is XP don't make them too big or they
may automatically(?) resize maximally which others
may find useful but I don't for the above reason.

Kiosk mode? How does that help? That's Fullscreen without controls?

javascript trick:

BTW notice that the same script fragment can be executed in any
IE window's Address bar (assuming Active Scripting is enabled
in its zone), so perhaps you could look at making it a keyboard
shortcut for moving windows to some particular location.

Try Helmut Rohrbeck's trick for fixing the size
and position of a window.

Here is his suggestion in IE5.Browser last year:
"
Try this: Make a shortcut to IEXPLORE.EXE, put it into the QuickLaunch Bar.
Right click the shortcut, choose properties and add behind the line in "Target"
"C:\Programs\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe" javascript:resizeTo(900,720);window.moveTo(450,360)

900 is the width
720 is the height
450,360 is the position of the upper left corner

Change these values as you like.

Worked for me! Is it WDU? (It has to be WDU because
he specifically mentions Quick Launch tray.) Is it because
my Home Page is About:Blank? The Address bar of the
new window is now showing only that Javascript appendage.
(no more sign of About:Blank)

It was sort of weird. The window popped up in its normal
spot and then shifted to this new position, which BTW is
partially off the screen.

Mysteries...

I don't believe that the other responders are understanding the behavior
you're describing. If I understand you correctly, new windows open at the
size you want, but offset from the position you want. So far as I know,
there's no fix. IE just does that, and you're supposed to like it because
MS knows best. The closest think I've found to a fix is to create a
favorite named "Position" with a URL of
"javascript:resizeTo(900,700);moveTo(75,1)" and put it on my Links bar.
That way I can fix the windows position with a single click. You'd need
to change the numbers to suit your own situation.

Robert and Gary S. - Thank you. I will try your soltions.
Have to go away this weekent and I have jury duty Monday
so I won't get a chance for a while. The reason for all
this is a financial app on the side of the display. New
IE windows covered part of it up. The thing is it worked
for 3 or 4 months, IE child windows opening up right over
the parent window, and one day it started this tile
thing. Thanks again

Neat refinement! You could even create a shortcut key for that then.
(Right-click, Properties of your Favorite.)
