new video card

We've put in a new video card on our Compaq 5000T And the
sound will not work unless we hook it up to the old port.
I'm guessing I have to somehow tell my machine to use the
new video card and not the video that is built into the
Compaq

So which card did you install? A video card or a sound card? Figure out
which it is and then see if the problem still exists?
