i'm just learning how to program these sheets. is there a book or some kind
of reference for all of the syntax? would it be a vba book or an excel book?
or is there one that combines the two. thank you

If you are a newcomer, you do not need VBA yet.
A complete list of all functions would be of little use till you get
familiar with the basics.
If you have a newer version (post 97) the Formula Palette is very helpful;
just type a brief idea of the task you want and Excel shows possible
functions.
best wishes

There is a little button to the left of the formula bar that say 'Fx'. By
clicking that button it opens a Fomula Wizard that can help you make a
formula. It also has individual wizards for each function too.

There is a great tutorial on pivot tables in the Excel help, it is called
"What's so great about Pivot Tables"

With those two things you can do most all of what excel has to offer. It is
really a fairly simple application but can be very powerful if you get good
at it.
