New to functions. Is this possible???

New here so I'm not sure if this deals w/ functions or not.
I have positive and negative figures in one column and what I want to do is
have excel auto fill a new column with certain IF/THEN type of responses but
also have it auto format those responses depending on what they are.

If the number is positive I want it to fill the new cell with the word "UP"
and color the cell green. If it is negative I want it to fill the new cell
with "DOWN" and color the cell red. If the number is 0 then I want it to
fill the new cell with "NONE" and color the cell orange. Can Excel do this
and if so, then how? I'm manually doing it now but would love for it to
become automated.
Thanks.

=IF(E18>0;"UP";IF(E18<0;"down";IF(E18=0;"None")))

and use the conditional format to format the cell as you want

Format > Condiotional Format > Cell VAlue IS > Equal To ="UP" format
add>> new conditionals to down and none

Assuming your list is in column A and you want the UP/DOWN/NONE in column B.

in B1 type =IF(A1>0,"UP",IF(A1=0,"NONE",IF(A1<0,"DOWN"))) now copy down as
far as you have the values in column A.

Now to format them...select column B, go to FORMAT | CONDITIONAL FORMATTING.
In first drop down select Cell Value Is..in second drop down select 'Equal
To' in the third box enter 0. click on format and change the pattern to
Orange. then click on Add, again Select Cell Value Is, second drop down
select Less Than, in the third box again enter 0 click on format and change
the pattern to Red...add another condition and this time select Greater than
in the second drop down and format it Green.

Hope this helps.

Your formula returns "NONE" for an empty cell so your formula could be
shortened to:

=IF(A1>0,"UP",IF(A1<0,"DOWN","NONE"))

or if you want to guard against an empty cell returning "NONE"

=IF(A1>0,"UP",IF(A1<0,"DOWN",IF(A1="","","NONE")))
