New to DHCP and Domain

J

Jason

I have set up a testing LAN with a Windows 2000 Server
with a couple of Windows 2000 workstation. I just connect
them as a Workgroup. I intend to promote it to a DC in
the future after gaining more experience.

I have already set up DHCP, DNS, WINS Service on that
Server and it works fine.

I add the Server Option "DNS Domain Name"
as "mycompany.com" this morning.

Besides, I have added "mycompany.com" to the "Primary DNS
Suffix" in all workstations and server. I would like to
know is it necessary for me to do so if I have already
added the "DNS Domain Name" Server Option in DHCP Server ?

Moreover, when I ping the client workstation, I get reply
if I use
PING WORKSTATION_NAME

However, when I attempt to use
PING WORKSTATION_NAME.mycompany.com, I get the
message "Ping Request cannot find the host
WORKSTATION_NAME.mycompany.com, please check the name and
try again".

I would like to know is there any mistake I have made ?

Thanks

Are the Windows 2000 clients using only the DNS server for name resolution?
Is the DNS range configured as "mycompany.com"? Do the workstations show up
in the DNS server's known clients list?

Dear Richard,

Thank you for your advice.

I have checked the testing LAN Server again. On the Server, under DHCP, I
have added DNS Server, Router, DNS Domain Name (As mycompany.com), Gateway &
WINS Server options.

Under the DNS Server, I have created a forward lookup zone. I have added
the DNS Server IP Address correctly.

From the DHCP Server, I have checked for one of the clients (Windows 2000
workstation), the IP Address allocated is 192.19.18.20 (Assigned by DHCP)
and the workstation name is admin1.mycompany.com

From that workstation, I can ping the server. I believe that the name
resolution is done by the WINS server. However, when I attempt to run
nslookup Sever, the reply is "Host is not found".

Besides, the Testing Server is also connected to my office LAN with another
NIC. I have set up RRAS properly. Moreover, I have added the DNS Suffix as
mycompany.com to the NIC connected to the Testing LAN manually.

I believe that I must have something missed.

Thanks again !

Jason

Dear Richard,

I have found that when I create the forward lookup zone, I use
zone1.mycompany.com. I believe that if I change it to mycompany.com, the
problem should be fixed.

Thanks

Yes, that definitely should fix it - if not, drop back by and we'll work on
it some more.

Dear Richard,

Thank you for your help. I have re-created the forward lookup zone and a
reverse lookup zone. It works fine.

The Windows 2003 Server is already formatted in NTFS format and I would like
to promote the Server to a Domain Controller.

I would like to ask
1) Does the Domain Name I choose must be the same as that I have been using
for the DNS Server - mycompany.com ? OR
Domain name is irrelevant with the Domain chosen in DNS Server ?
2) Is it possible for me to type dcpromote only without any other more
change ?

Thanks

When you promote your domain controller, you'll want to create a DNS zone
integrated with Active Directory. So the details of that DNS zone will need
to match the domain name in use. Most likely you'll want to run DCPROMO
first, then create the new DNS zone, finally remove the old DNS zone once
the new zone is up and running. If you wanted to keep company.com as the
name of your AD domain, you'd need to delete the current DNS zone first,
then run DCPROMO, then create the new zone.
