new server install

I just placed a win2k server machine in an offsite
building as a fileserver, not set up as a domain
controller. In the event viewer I get errors in the
application log with event id 1000 and the following
message: Windows cannot access the registry information at
\\domain\sysvol\domain\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-
00C04FB984F9}\User\registry.pol with (5).

I am not using this server to logon users to the domain as
I have a server to fulfill that function. Since I placed
the server into production the users logon scripts do not
run. I believe the two are related but not sure how to go
about making the error go away and getting the logon
scripts to run. Followed KB article 290647, but I do not
have sysvol folders on this server. Do I need them??

I would start by running DCDIAG from the Windows 2000 support tools on the
DC. Evaluate that before making decisions.

You mentioned that your scripts are not running, are your policies?

My second thought is perhaps the new Win2k server could be promoted to
another DC, then run DCDIAG to assure functionality and a good synch, then
DCPROMO down the new DC so you get a clean environment. As I said, I would
run the tool on the existing DC to see what's happening before doing
anything else.
