New Realtek HD Audio Drivers -- ver. 1.90 -- 31 March 2007

There is no way to get automatic updates (as far as I know) directly from
Realtek. And the Realtek updates from Windows Update are w a y, w a y
outdated.

Strange I downloaded and installed R190 and it loaded a driver
older than R160... I had 6.0.1-5374 and 6.0.01-5217 was in
R190. So I reverted to my previous one.

Spirit,
just a guess on my part, but I have seen this before. I think that they
incorporate an earlier driver along with whatever other updates because
of problems with one or more newer drivers. Personally, I always go with
the newest revision number as long as it works on my machine.

Is Realtek offering drivers with Bas and Treble yet? I know there is an EQ,
but I sort of prefer the KISS method. I'd love to dump my Creative card.

I just updated with R190 and the driver is 6.0.1.5591. Try downloading
the update again and reinstall it.

Originally I downloaded the EXE version and as I "thought" it installed an
older
version. This time I downloaded the ZIP and it too left me with an older
version.
However I reran the SETUP and an even older version remained. After running
it 4 times FINALLY the 6.0.1-5991 version was installed.

My guess is the setup.exe is designed to remove all previous installs before
installing
the update. Strange I had to run the SETUP 4 times to do this.

It's usually necessary to run the installation file twice unless you
first uninstall the existing driver. The first run will uninstall the
existing Realtek driver, and the second will install the new driver.

You don't indicate what type machine you have (Dell, HP, etc.); however,
some manufacturers setup the system so that an original driver installs
when the current one is removed. I had this happen with an Nvidia
driver on an old Dell machine.

I'm taking a guess here, but it sounds like that's what you may be
experiencing when the existing Realtek is uninstalled. The system
installs an on board Realtek driver that's much older than the currently
installed driver. Apparently, running the installation file multiple
times brought you up to date.

Had to run it 4 times.... 1st three times it left an older driver than the
one
on the previous run.... maybe because those drivers were provided via
Windows Update and not manually installed.

I downloaded the ZIP version and ran it, sure enough an older driver was
installed.
So I ran it again and an even older version was installed. After running it
4 times
finally the newest version was installed. My guess is the old drivers were
installed
via Windows Update and the Setup for the new one had to uninstalled each of
the old versions 1 at a time.

As a general rule, I'd recommend not using Windows Update to install
hardware drivers.

But, Microsoft says you need newer version then 6.0.1.6242 from Realtek. The
only one I saw on Realtek site, I just downloaded is 6.0.1.5591, and Update
won't let me have SP1???????

Download the free standing installer:

This business about the driver issue with SP1 seems to me to be a bit
overdone. You may just have to reinstall a few drivers.

"These drivers do not follow our guidelines for driver installation and as a
result, some beta participants who were using Windows Vista and updated to
Service Pack 1 reported issues with these devices. Because the issue was
with the way the drivers were installed and not the drivers themselves, the
solution was simply to reinstall the drivers."

I had to reinstall my Synaptics Touchpad drivers.

You could do the same with your Realtek drivers.

Have a go at it.

Are you saying MS Article 948343 is incorrect?

No, he isn't. He is saying that Windows Update is not offering you the
upgrade but you can download the standalone installer anyway. You most
likely will need to reinstall the RealTek driver because reinstallation is
the driver problem. The drivers work but have a defect that prevents SP1
from automatically reinstalling the drivers after SP1 is installed. If you
know how to reinstall drivers then you can proceed to SP1. However, SP1
goes onto Automatic Updates in a few days anyway so you might as well just
wait.

I have 6.0.1.5591 and Vista is working just fine. I was offered and
downloaded and installed the upgrade with no problems.

That driver must not be why auto updates is not showing me SP1. On my newer
Fujitsu laptop, update shows it's ready to download already.
