New problems with CHKDSK, System Restore, and Yahoo Messenger :(

I defragmented my hard drive about a week ago, and did not try to use Yahoo
Messenger until yesterday. It gave me an option to update to a new version,
but when I installed it, the new version refused to open. This is where
things get strange. When I tried to open the app, the system waited a
second as if starting the application, but no window opened. Yet when I
looked in Task Manager, it showed up in the Processes tab.

I uninstalled it, and reinstalled the old version. It didn't work either.

I went to use System Restore....and it gave me the response "System could
not be restored - no changes have been made." Same result with different
dates. This is the first time this has happened to me.

By this point I'm getting worried. I open up CHKDSK to run at my next
restart...but instead of doing its usually-lengthy thing (it generally takes
quite a while to scan the disk) it simply says IMMEDIATELY "Your disk type
is NTFS. The disk is clean." Very bizarre as there was no time for the disk
to even be checked.

I just installed IE beta 3 today (from beta 2 in which everything ran fine),
I have the updated Norton 2006, I keep everything on my computer well updated
and run Microsoft Defender and Spybot as well. No problems detected. This
problem began before I installed Beta 3 so that isn't the problem.

Can anyone help me with this? I'm confused as heck and out of options.

Thanks, my CHKDSK ran fine, didn't find any errors. I also ran sfc.exe
scannow today. Yahoo still won't open though :(
