New printer causing XP kernel SNAFU ?

Hi Johnny_Bailo, Ya gone done an' told me:

Real life from work yesterday:
1. User needed .NET 1.1 installed but had to install SP4 for his w2k pro
first and then some patches to the service pack,
...about 11 of them, his system hadn't been updated for about a year.
2. After patches installed, when printing to a Lexmark, his applications
would shutdown. _Any_ application -- _Word_, ftp client, and so on.
3. Turns out there's a _Hotfix_ for the _Patch_ that
fixes the service _Pack_ that causes the problem.
4. Larger question:
How in the world should a printer driver be able to
shut down an application ? So much for Ring 0 !

I highly suspect my new laser printer, a Brother HL_2040,
yet _Un_installing it and deleting it's directories didn't help ! ?

I even upgraded to XP_Pro, downloading every Windows_Update I could find,
....all to no avail. Aren't _Hotfixes_ located at Update.MicroSoft.COM ?

I'm going to begin with a freshly partitioned hard disk,
my new 100 USD, 200 GigaByte from Seagate... install Win_XP_Pro, VC_8
and my wireless adapter... and nothing else... then cross my fingers.

If that works I'll add shit to my hard drive, one at a time,
saving the printer for last... testing the kernel's sanity as I go.

If the printer does cause the problem, and _Un_installing it doesn't help,
then, well... I'll be ****ed proper then.

Not always.

HotFixes are just that "hot off the press" so they are not part of
Update because they are "install at your own risk" types of things where
you have to be aware of your configuration and version.

You can find the hotfixes at http://support.microsoft.com as links
associated with Q articles.

You can also find them on the ftp.microsoft.com site.

Hmm... nothing about my printer was mentioned there... thanks anyways.
I hope to get my new hard disk today,
....a perfectly clean install is going to be my best bet, I think.

On another note... Ethen and Patinha are getting nasty on my floor again.

Seattle has something called Just_Cause_Eviction,
but it only applies to Month_To_Month contracts,
so, although I won my eviction hearing,
I'm now on a lease which ends January 31st.

My landlord might possibly renew it, come January 20th,
after all, I've lived here for over 5 years, always paying on time,
....so now I'm not taking any visitors other than Ethen, Patinha,
and, to a much lesser extent, Jessica... and I'm hoping they'll lay low for me.

I don't have to pay any rent come January first
because my last month's rent was prepaid,
so, if I do have to move, I'll only be out the deposit, 100 bucks.

I'm surprised you (and they) don't get on Section 8.

Hey, you can always move to Kent...why not get a 3-bedroom...one for
each of you. At $800 total, each of you would have to come up with 200
and change -- which you do already. There's lots of nicer cheap
apartments in and around the sound!

....it pisses me off. I don't do drugs, as you know.

You asked me: I'm surprised you guys don't get on Section 8.

Maybe I should,
....but it takes years to get and I think I'd have to live in special housing.

Being a pussy-whipped man is almost as bad! I hope you are, at the
very least, ****ing the free-loaders on a regular basis (well maybe
not the drugger. She's probably HIV+.). Your kind of wimpy behavior

I'm 46 while Patinha and Ethen are both 18,
....Patinha is a former gymnist who weighs about 85 pounds at 5'2" and a C cup.

I'd never **** them or anything like that, in fact,
they call me Nanny_Jeff because that's basically what I am to them.

I don't know why I don't kick them out,
maybe it's because they're mildly interesting to me,
or maybe I feel like I can help them, I don't know,

They don't control me, or anything like that, I sent the rules,
they leave when I tell them to, for example.
