New PC can't browse shared folders on workgroup

I know that this has probably been asked a thousand times before, but I'm
ready to throw my laptop against the wall. I have 3 PCs in a workgroup peer
to peer network. One has XP Professional and the other two XP home edition.
The new laptop can ping the other two PCs as well as the router, but every
time I try to explore and open up the workgroup HOME (which I have called on
the other two) I get this annoying message that I may not have permission,
the list of servers is not found, and/or home is not accessible.

I have checked all three computers and they have the same protocols and all
have the computer browser service started. The workgroup is the same on all
three. The other computers can see the new laptop, and I can ping everything.

what have I done wrong???? Please feel free to email to
(e-mail address removed)

thanks!

Jeff,

Having the browser running on all 3 computers is a very common mistake; that is
where browser conflicts start, which can cause your symptoms. Run "browstat
status" to diagnose a browser conflict.

Jeff, don't ever post your real, unmunged email address on Usenet or
messageboards. It will get harvested by spambots. Here is a link
explaining how to munge:

As for your problem, the most common reason for your sort of error is a
misconfigured firewall. The easiest way to set things up is by running
the Network Setup Wizard (Control Panel applet). Try that first. The
Workgroup name is irrelevant to file/printer sharing. Have all three
machines turned on when you run the Wizard.

Here are some links to help you, including a network troubleshooter by
MVP Hans-Georg Michna. If running the Network Wizard doesn't help, take
the time to go through the troubleshooter and it will pinpoint the
problem area(s).
