Wow, I wish I had $5K to blow on a new computer!!!!! Anyway, most of the
stuff you did would be the same ... except I would want 2GB of RAM, a
Radeon 9800XT instead of the GeForce, two optical drives (one for
high-speed reading, one for writing), and I'd do the hard drives like so:

1x RAID5 SATA PCI card
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...116-023&catalog=410&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

8X 160MB SATA HD, 8MB cache
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-144-151&catalog=14&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

Yeah, that would be one helluva kickass system. Run the drives in RAID5
so you have 1.12TB of storage available (and 160GB of redundancy).
That'll be some kickass speed ... much faster than the 2X Raptors you
configued, and a lot more storage to boot.

One problem though: your case might not be big enough to accomodate
eight hard drives :)

Just wondering - what do you guys think of my suggestion? Not
necessarily in relation to the original poster, I'm just wondering if I
should build an array like this myself. It sounds mighty interesting
(and I always need more storage space). If you guys were to configure a
nice high-capacity storage array, how would you do it? Would you go
with RAID5 and 8 medium-capacity SATA drives, or would you go for
something else? Thanks in advance for the advice.
