And chasing the MVPs away.

They pulled that stunt some years back. They back-flipped and reinstated
the MVP program following howls of anguish from apparently many
news.microsoft users - including me.

If the reality-challenged bean-counters at M$ simply looked at these MS
newsgroups, and saw .....

(a) the relative freedom from trolls and idiots
(b) the excellent advice from the magnificent MVPs
(c) the money saved by M$ from seekers of wisdom coming here rather than the
worthless formal corporate M$ "Help"
(d) the inestimable sheer value of "good will" that M$ gains from sponsoring
these newsgroups

...... they would not even contemplate such a kick-in-the-guts to their
customers.

But of course those intellectually, ethically and morally twisted shambling
horrors at Redmond saw the Gordon Gekko "Greed is Good" movie "Wall Street"
and they thought it was a corporate training video. Bastards.

A technical forum, and marketing has taken charge. A sad day for us
all.

If the days of the MVPs are numbered, then let me be among the first
to say thanks to you all for the huge amount of advice that I've
gotten just from lurking in this forum over the years. Ever since I
discovered it, this group has been the place I've come for technical
information on XP.

But I wonder: It's my understanding that anybody can create a
newsgroup. So is there anything stopping someobody from creating a
non-MS-sanctioned Win7 group comparable to this one, in, say, the
alt.comp area instead of the microsoft area?

There is a popular newsgroup service that offers 35GB/mo for $12.99/mo, down
to 3GB/mo for $2.99.
It has three windows7 groups.
I don't know which service to buy, because I don't know how much GB I use.
I spend about 15 minutes a day reading 15 or 20 posts in this group
(microsoft.public.windows.general).
How can I calculate how much GB I use per day, so I can determine which
service to buy?
Thanks,
JE

there is a Google newsgroup for Windows 7. It's free. And it's called
Windows 7. I've asked a couple of Qs on it recently and had them
answered, and so far it's free of spam.

Well said with the exception of one word, 'horrors'. FOOLS would have
been a good choice!

OPs point, which I agree with, is not that MS would close the MVP
program, but rather that many MVPs despise the web forums and would
simply go away if the newsgroups disappear.

Would you please post their names? Are they alt.* groups?

Two points:

1. For this newsgroup, microsoft.public.windows.general, no paid news
server is required. You can use the free microsoft news server,
msnews.microsoft.com. In fact, in my view, that's your best choice.

2. For many other text newsgroups, you can use a free news server such
as news.eternal-september.org.

Leaving aside the Windows 7 groups, if I were in your shoes I would
start with the two free servers I mention, and go to a paid one only
later, if you find that the free ones don't meet your needs.
