New mobo, new activation key?

R

Vista is telling me I have to re-activate my Windows install. Same computer,
motherboard died, had to put in a new one, now I gotta buy Vista gain?

You do not have buy another one, just reactivate the one you have. During
its dialogue with you it should have suggested you use a phone activation,
even give you a toll free number to call. When you do, tell them you
replaced a blown motherboard. They will give you a long number to type in
and you will be all set. Max 5 minutes, usually much quicker.

Did it say you had to buy a new copy? No, it said you have to reactivate,
use the activate by phone option and explain what you did.

D

Dave

No, you don't have to buy anything.
Try the activation again, and when it fails, call the telephone number.
You will have to enter the series of numbers on the screen, then answer a
few questions.
If the robot doesn't approve, stay on the line until you get a real person
to talk to.
Explain what you changed.

Can someone please post the phone number here? I am not getting the phone
option available to me in the dialog box, only "activate online."

It has been a long time since I needed it. I seem to remember that you try
to activate on-line, after that fails you are given the option to try by
phone. You first get an automated system that will probably also fail, hang
on, a human will come on and take care of the problem.

Online activation must fail before the options are delivered.

Is the only way i would need a new key by getting a new Mother board? Because
i recently sent it fro repairs and they not only didnt fix the problem but
the video card has been running worse and worse and my games arent working as
well as they had before. Do you think they tampered with my machine?

D

David B.

You would have to ask "them" if they tampered with your machine, how would
we know?
And you don't need a new key, you need to reactivate.

You'll need to reinstall Vista. If you didn't get the replacement
motherboard from the original computer manufacturer, you may also have
to buy a new license, as the OEM's chosen Recovery method may well not
work on a non-supported 3rd party motherboard.

No. You just have to show MS and the Department of Homeland Security
what you have done to your PC so they can continue to recognize you.

Yeah, I hate this one too. I replace my MoBo and Vista turns around and
accuses me of stealing the software. You old registration key is no longer
vaild because too much changed on your system. Yeah its just the MoBo but to
Vista that means just about all of the hardware you are running changed.

The bonus gift: Any time you decide to reinstall Vista, you have to call in
now. Thanks!

It ahs to do with the points system, too many points spent in an 18
month period and you will have to call India. MS thinks we are all
cheats and thieves, some of us are, but NOT most of us!

NO you do NOT have to rebuy Vista, just call the 800 number and tel
lthem what happened and they wil lgive you a new number. Yes it is
India, we all have to deal with it.

I already found windows XP reactivation unbearable as a licensed user, and
suffered the same from my VStudio license.
I can't imagine buying a new license of my OS due to an hardware problem. (I
don't want to buy a new wheel drive when my engine car is broken ...)
Otherwise, where is the advantage of Vista vs Mac OSX ? none in this case :
with Mac, especially iMac, you're bound to the hardware and the manufacturer.
Regards.
