New Memory-Now Intermittent Mouse/KB

Marc

Hello to group:
Recently installed a new Kingston 256MB PC2100 (DDR) chip in my MSI
K7T-266Pro 2A mainboard...added with two sticks of Infineon 128MB DDR
for a total of 512MB. Computer is noticeably faster on both bootup and
shutdown, as well as opening applications. However....
Every other boot or so, the machine will not seem to recognize the
mouse or keyboard on the WinXP logon screen. I have to do a hard reset,
go through chkdsk functions, and then the mouse and KB are detected and
OK. I tried playing with the memory settings in the mainboard BIOS,
changning settings to SPD, HCLK (?), HCLK-33, etc all to no real
resolution. I did have to move the Kingston memory into Slot 1 on the
MB, or else with the Infineon memory in Banks 1 and 2 only 384MB is
detected. Machine is an AMD 1700XP+, NVIDIA GeoForce II card, WD 40GB
hard drive, etc.
Anyone have an idea on what is going on here? I didn't have this
problem before putting in the Kingston memory, but I doubt it's
defective or anything (bought brand new at OfficeMax last week-$29 after
rebate).....TIA,
Marc

Even if the POST indicates that the memory checks out OK you may find
that the same stick subjected to MemTest86 or similar will reveal
errors. You can download this program free at

http://www.memtest86.com

the latest version to run on floppy disc is fine, clicking on the
downloaded exe file will call for a formatted floppy disc and install
the program automatically. NB you will NOT be able to read the disc in
Windows Explorer\My Computer as it will appear to be blank, this is
normal.

Put the prepared disc into the floppy drive, make sure your BIOS is
set to boot from the Floppy Drive first [or second if the first is CD
Drive] then reboot. The test runs automatically.

Hope this helps, best regards,
