Windows 2000 Pro. I installed new memory in my system, taking it from 256 MB
to 512 MB. Is there anything I need to do configuration wise to help my
system fully utilize the extra memory and to see the fullest possible speed
increase from the upgrade? Thanks for the help. God bless.

Increase you pagefile.

Right Click on the MyComputer icon on the desktop. Go to the Advanced Tab.
Click the Performance Button and change the Pagefile to be at least 1.5
times your physical memory. It will probably have a recommended amount for
you listed.

That should increase automatically. Nothing need be done.

Dear Dr. Doug:
Memory optimization is performed in the background by both hardware and
software components. Running Windows 2000 Professional w/ 256MB of memory is
somewhat akin to running a lawnmower on a mixture of half gasoline/half
kerosene.
Right-click on your lower taskbar & open the Task Manager; left click on
Performance, and watch while you run applications, et.al. You have just done
your computer and Win2K Pro a very big favor and you will be treated with
more respect by both.

Actually, when you install fresh, the recommeded will be set to match, but
when you add memory, the minimum/max does not increase. The pagefile will
dynamically change as needed within the previous min and max values, but if
you add memory you may want to increase the min and max.

Of the top of my head on a Windows 2000 machine I believe when you install
with 256MB of memory your page file range will be 384-768. When you pop in
the 256 after install you will see the settings stay the same, however the
recommended in the bottom part of the screen jumps up to a 768MB minimum and
I believe 1024 or 1536 max. You have to manually change the set options to
match the recommended. It does not happen automatically
