Greetings all,

I come here, from Win 98, and must prepare a brand new PC before installing
Full Retail Win XP Home SP2.

The P4 3.2 GHz 1024MB machine will have 2 x 200GB hard drives, plus 1 x
DVDRW, plus 1 x DVDROM.

First, what is the best way to connect these 4 drives (Primary, Secondary,
Masters & Slaves) ?

Second, what is good arrangement for disk partitions and FAT32 / NTFS file
systems. Should the OS, Swap file and Temp folders be put in their own
partitions? and if so, how big should these be ?

Should all partitions be created FAT32 initially and only be converted to
NTFS once setup and installation of all applications is complete ?

Pointers to the recommended / best FAQ boards would be appreciated.

TIA Rednelle

One as Master and one as Slave for each ribbon.

Use NTFS.

Yes, along with all the programs. I would go for 20GB and leave the rest
of the drive as one partition of 180. I would do the same for the other
drive.

NTFS from the get go. You will have problems with FAT32 on drives that big.

Alias

Primary master 200 GB drive
30 GB NTFS OS, Swap file and Temp folders
remainder of drive NTFS
Primary slave 200 GB drive NTFS
Secondary master DVDRW
Secondary slave DVD

Thanks Ron.
Just to confirm; OS, Swap and Temp all go in 1 logical drive ?

I have a similar P4 setup that I have --DVDROM = primary master--
--CDRW = secondary master-- HDD#1 = SATA0 -- HDD#2 = SATA1.
I use one partition NTFS on each drive, my external backup drives are
formatted
to FAT 32 so they can be read/write with other OSs.
Good Luck

Thanks Frank,

I hadn't mentioned PenDrives but I do have a couple and will keep then
FAT32.
