New home PC doesn't see LAN

Bought a new XP machine for home use, and hooked it up to the LAN, where
there are three other PCs. Even though I set the Workgroup name the same as
the LAN (HOME), it can't find other the computers, nor can they find it.
Under network connections it says the LAN is enabled.

I am not that familiar with XP yet, what and where do I need to check? The
other XP machine works fine but I can't recall how I set it up last year,
and I can't find a setting that is different. When I click on View
Workgroup computers it waits a couple of minutes then gives a message saying
the administartor needs to do something (dang it - left the message at
home!). All users are set up as administartors, and when I booted in safe
mode as the administrator there were no network settings, even though I said
safe mode with networking. A diagnostics on the LAN showed no errors.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks,
Mich

Almost identical problem when upgrading? one machine on
LAN from Win2K to XP. Other machines on Win98 could not
be accessed from XP machine although had worked with
Win2K. On suggestion from colleage who had similar
problem with XP and OS2, I installed NETBEUI on all
machines (see KB301041 HOW TO: Install NetBEUI on Windows
XP for details). LAN has worked perfectly since. Not an
ideal solution but gets Win98 to talk to XP.

Hope this helps

The other machines are Win XP Home, Win 2000 Pro and an old Win Me PC which
I don't really care about. So Win98 is out of the picture. Somehow I set
the other XP and the 2000 PC up right but am having a brain meltdown
here....

Thanks anyway...

Check to see if the built in Firewall is active.

Control Panel - Network Connections - Right Click Local Area Connection
and choose Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and see if the box is
check for the Firewall.

Run the Network Setup Wizard. That will provide links to everything you
need.

Is the XP Firewall running? If so this may be the cause of your problem.
