Running XP HOme edition SP3 my machine suddenly is telling me that the
"NEW HARDWARE WIZARD 'found new hardware. Thing is, there isn't any to
find!

When I tell it to look for drivers it says the 'device is unknown'
what a help that is. The icon in the tooltray looks like a pair of
scissors from what I can see. I can't click on it and get any
information when the wizard is running. If I close the wizard then I
get the message saying the 'device won't work properly' then the icon
goes away.

I get this each time I boot up and I'm sick of it, this started after
I took out AVG virus scanner and put in AVAST. No other physical
changes were made to the machine nothing was added or taken out.

What can I do to stop this nonsense?

Thanks to all in advance,

J T

If I remember correctly then there are two ways to close the wizard:
a) Cancel it;
b) Tell it to stop looking for a driver

When you select option b) then you will get no further prompts.

Check in system hardware and see if anything shows with an exclamation mark,
you may have something whos drivers are corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.

Does "Device Manager" show any entries with
a ? next to it.

HI JS

Yes there were two exclamtion marks that were labeled "unknown" so I
simply deleted them.

It seems to be fine now, thanks I should have thought of this myself!

I would recommend that you look at the
list of devices an see if anything (a device) is
missing that you knew you had before the AVG/AVAST issue.

If not then your good to go.
and thank for the feedback!
