I added a new larger hardrive to my XP computer. Can I
copy the contents of my old hardrive, including XP to the
new hardrive and rename the new drive "C"? Then erase the
old drive and use it for data storage?

What precautions should I take? Will it work? What
would be the best way to handle to swap?

This all depends. If your thinking is to copy all of the
drives contents to the new drive, remove the old drive,
and boot with the new one this will NOT WORK.

I would invest 50 bucks in Drive Image and use that
software to copy the old drive directly to the new drive.
This will assure your boot sector gets copied properly.
However, this COULD fail.

The best and most efficient method is to install Windows
XP on the new hardrive all by itself, reinstall all your
programs and pull the data off your old drive as you need
it. Then once it's all copied, format the old drive and
use it as a spare.

Check the web site of the drive manufacturer; they should have a program
listed that will allow you to transfer settings/files/programs/etc from one
drive to another.
