HI,

My computer has a SATA 1 hard drive in it, and its two years old. My
motherboard is an ASUS PT, and I believe it only supports SATA 1. I bought a
SATA 2 drive though because for some odd reason, my windows experience index
hard drive rating was only a 2.4 when everything else rated at over 5. I know
that if my motherboard only supports sata1 that I won't get sata 2 speeds,
but will my windows experience index improve at all for the hard drive if I
go with the new one ?

SATA 3-Gigabyte PCI controller cards are inexpensive. You may
want to get the benefit of the faster performance by using one. You
should be able to turn off the motherboard based controller. Just a
note, most SATA 3-Gigabyte drives come with a jumper installed to
clamp the throughput to SATA 1.5 Gigabyte speeds. You may need
to remove that jumper (Very Carefully) if you update your controller.

Hi,

I know these controller cards come in pci express, but my pci express slot
is already occupied. I have two available PCI slots though, do the cards come
in this form as well?

PCI Yes, usually around ~$25-30 dollars. Many now come with an
eSATA socket on the backplane plate for use with an external SATA
drive/enclosure. I use an Acomdata external SATA drive and it far
out-performs any USB external drive and is "Bootable".

SATA 1 and 2 have not much to do with speeds. They are versions of the SATA
specs that the drive conforms to.

I would not concern myself too much with WEI. If you're happy with system
performance, fuggedaboudit.

Thank you for all your help! According to sony I have an asus motherboard but
they won't tell me what kind is in the VGC-RA830g. I am going to open the pc
case and find out the model number so I can hopefully find a controller card
that is compatible.

Your PC uses the Intel 915P Chipset which provides only SATA-1.5
Gigabyte performance.

Most any brand of PCI SATA-3Gig controller should be compliant
with your setup. To avoid conflicts you may want to turn off the
on-board SATA channels.

Hi there,

Thank you again for all your help! I have a few last questions. How do I
turn off the onboard SATA controllers? I am going to be using a Seagate 320
gigabyte drive with casing externally for my new main drive, so would it be
easier to just unplug my two internal drives rather than shut off the onboard
sata controllers?
