New feature in MS Word - Escape should close out of header and foo

In Microsoft Word, after you are done with entering information in the header
and footer, the user should be able to hit escape to exit the header and
footer mode. This would make MS Word more keyboard friendly. Almost any
programmer's goal when creating a program is to make the program usable by
not just only the mouse but make it possible to fully control the program
with the keyboard alone.

This suggestion has piqued my curiosity. The Header and Footer toolbar Close
button has an accelerator key indicated, but I can't figure out any way to
shift Word's focus to the toolbar so that the key would work. Does anyone
know how to select a specific toolbar? I know it's possible in the
Footnote/Endnote pane (and it should work the same way for header/footer),
but I can't remember what that is, either.

At least on this PC (Word 2003), when the focus is in the header or footer
paragraph, the accelerators Alt+S (for Insert AutoText) and Alt+C (for
Close) do operate on the H&F toolbar.

Also, after pressing Alt+S, you can use the Tab/Shift+Tab or left/right
arrows to move the focus to the other buttons on the toolbar.

I suspected as much but didn't try Alt+S. Alt+C doesn't work because Alt+C
defaults to Acrobat Comments on the main menu bar. Another way Adobe makes
life difficult!

Huh. That is a good idea.

You can probably set up your own keyboard shortcut via Tools | Customize.
Look under the View commands, one of them should do the trick. Should be a
toggle command, assign a keyboard shortcut to it.
