new email envelope icon

Is it possible to have the new messages envelope icon to only appear if I
have new unread messages in my inbox?
For example, I'm on a mailing list which I use rules to filter to a certain
folder so I don't need to know I have new messages for that. Similarly, my
ISP flags junk messages and I use another rule to delete them.
What I'm trying to do is only be notified if unread messages appear in my
inbox that have not already been filtered by any rules.

But those messages DO appear in your Inbox for a brief time prior to your
rules refiling them and Outlook can't know at the time the messages come in
and the icon posted that rules are going to move them somewhere else in a
little while. Moreover, the rules that do the moving can't turn off the
icon because they can't know that there aren't additional new messages that
will wind up remaining in the Inbox.

So they can't program it to only appear after all messages have been
downloaded and rules applied?
Guess I'll have to look forward to Thunderbird having this feature either
built in or via extension
