New downloads

I cannot complete new downloads of various products. For example, I
attempted to purchase and download a Symantec internet security product with
a firewall, but was unable to begin the download. I believe the only
firewall operating on my machine currently is the Windows firewall. There
was a trial version of a firewall that came with the computer which I
declined to purchase after the trial period. In fact, I uninstalled that
program at that point. I have Symantec Antivirus installed, but no other
firewall or antivirus programs.
Symantec was unable to help resolve this problem.
I don't know if it's related, but Explorer does not seem to be operating
appropriately either. I normally use Firefox, but when I attempted to use
Explorer it was unable to connect to sites (while Firefox worked fine).
Thanks for any help you can provide. This is quite frustrating.

If you read thru these post you will find that Symantec and (i assume you
have Vista installed) & Vista have compatabillity problems even though
Symantec is supposed to be Vista ready. I and many others have disposed of
Symantec and installed another AV program such as, AVG, Avast, etc., which
work very well with Vista.
The Windows Firewall with Defender & AVG, Avast, etc will give good
protection, installing another malware, spyware program as well as Defender
will not go astray.
Personally I have used Firefox/Thunderbird for the past few years, this is a
personal preference, not because I don't like IE7, I just find it works
better for me.
I prefer not to have all my eggs in one basket, so to speak!!!!!
I accept that you have spent money on Symantec, so the choice is yours.

Something to keep in mind; you can NOT run 2 firewalls OR 2 anti-viruses at
the same time on your computer.
It will cause major conflict.

Gentlemen,
much thanks. I dumped the symantec antivrus program (i got it for free from
grad school), and never installed the symantec firewall. Their customer
service was atrocious, and now it looks like they could have just told me
from the get go that symantec and vista are incompatible but chose not to to
try and make a sale.
things seem to be working fine now. sorry i didn't look more through the
logs here and find out about symantec before posting. as i'm sure you
understand i had spent several hours trying to resolve this problem before
posting here and was rather weary...

A clarification here:

You "can* run either two firewalls or two antiviruses at once. However
you *should* not.

It will cause major conflict.

It may or may not cause problems, major or not. However the risk of
conflicts between the two is always there and that's why you should
not do this.

I have come to your suggestion "not to use two firewalls". This is very
interesting because I have a Winow's Firewall and the Firewall that came with
"Window's Life OnCare" from Microsoft. Can you please tell me if there is a
difference in Firewalls.
I am in Windows Vista.

Thank You.

The Windows OneCare firewall will disable Vista's own firewall, so you are
not using two firewalls you are only using one - the one supplied by Windows
OneCare.
