Sanjeev

hi all,

My company has opened a branch in another city & both the offices connnected
by a 1MB point to point link. i am now planning for infrastructre setup. My
requirement is that i want to setup an additional domain controller at the
new site. so how one should go about it. The head office has 3 Dcs & 400
clients. Both the offices are in different IP ranges, main office has
192.168.90.X & the branch office is in 172.16.0.X series. what are steps one
should take at the branch office end when one needs to join a win2k server
to the domain & promote it to a domain controller and configure it as a GC.

any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sanjeev.

Sanjeev,

You don't mention whether you're using w2k or w2k3...I can tell you about
w2k.

1. Install the OS on the new server.
2. Make sure the server has a static ip address and the ONLY dns server
listed belongs to your dns server in your existing site.
3. On the new server, go to a command prompt: ipconfig /registerdns
4. Join the new server to the domain.
5. Create a new site and subnet for the new server. Make sure you assign the
subnet to the site.
6. DCPROMO the new server. After the server reboots, verify AD installation:

7. Move the server to the new site.
8. Add the server to the Default Site Link (Active Directory Sites &
Services(ADS&S) > Inter-Site Transports > IP.

To configure it as a GC:
1. In ADS&S, drill down to the NTDS Settings for the new server in the new
site.
2. Right-click NTDS Setting > Properties.
3. You'll see the checkbox for the GC.
