I get a message saying I am low on virtual memory, after
which my new XP locks up.

Before changing the settings on your Virtual memory, recommend you contact tech support of your PC. You state that it is a new PC, changing the memory settings could void your warranty.

Greetings --

Huh? How could adjusting Virtual Memory possibly affect warranty
coverage?

Hi, Virtual memory is "inside" of Window. That would not in any way void
any warranty.
