My computer which had Office 2000 has crashed and I bought a new computer
with Vista on it. When I install Office 2000 it says it can't find the
address book files. I have purchased the Office 2007 upgrade but am
wondering if it will have trouble upgrading from what I have since it isn't
functioning properly. I know if I open the box I can't return it! Any
advice?

All you *really* need from Outlook 2000 is your .PST file, which contains all
your data -- messages, appointments, contacts, tasks, etc. Office 2000 is
not supported for use with Vista, so you really do need to upgrade to Office
2007. See this article for help with the backup and restoration:

My computer which has the original on it will not come on any more, so backup
and restoration are not an option. I thought if I installed Outlook 2000 on
the new computer I could retrieve my address book, and then upgrade from
there, but this isn't working. The Office 2007 I purchased is for upgrade
rather than original installation, and what I am wondering is whether that
will work or whether I need to return it before opening the box and get the
whole original Office 2007 instead. That's where I am stuck. Thanks for
your interest in helping!

Can you take the hard drive out of your old computer and hook it up to the
new one to get files off of it, or is it the hard drive that is actually
broken?

Also, if you have the Office 2000 installation CD, you should be able to
upgrade to Office 2007 -- it should ask you to prove that you have a license
for a previous version and if you put your Office 2000 disc in your drive
when prompted, you should be good to go.

I finally was successful by uninstalling all former Office files and once
again downloading the trial version of office 2007. Now I have Outlook but
isn't there a way to find my address book from somewhere out in cyberspace?
I thought in the past that I had been able to do that.
