This past Monday I bought a brand new computer from a retail store (I stress
brand new because it's relevant to my question). To all appearances, there
were no previous owners of this computer--the box had never been opened; it
was clearly still factory-sealed. So who the heck is RIZWAN, which is the
name on the main user subfolder in the Documents and Settings folder? *I'm*
not Rizwan--I don't even know what language that name is!
I've checked just about every thread on the various XP boards but haven't
found another instance of a new computer having user account names already in
place.
Now, I did something that might have been stupid when viewed with 20/20
hindsight. I made changes to the settings without consulting these boards. I
followed instructions I found in the XP help file installed to change the
user account name. The logon window shows my user account name and that's
just ducky...but the Docs and Settings user subfolder is still named RIZWAN
instead of my user account name.
(BTW, I realize it's possible the computer was refurbished even though it
wasn't labeled as a refurbished machine. I don't care. That isn't the point.
My only concern is that I want the Docs and Settings folders to show MY name,
not some foreign name I've never even heard before.)
I note that it's stated repeatedly that one can't, under any circumstances,
rename subfolders in the Docs and Settings folder as it's a system folder.
I've seen suggestions about creating a new user account, copying all the
folders from the old user folder into the new one, and then deleting (?) the
old user folder. (Which strikes me as weird...you can *delete* a folder but
you can't rename it? Who's the rocket scientist that came up with that?)
Is that what I need to do--create a new user account, copy information from
the old Docs and Settings RIZWAN subfolder into a newly created Docs and
Settings user subfolder, and then delete the old user account and the RIZWAN
folder?
Or do I need to do something else entirely?
Won't someone *please* help me make RIZWAN go away?
Cheers,
Liz
