I posted this the other day and have not heard from anyone, I will post it
again with some more info,I hope this helps.
Hello All,
I have two computers #1 runs win xp pro sp2 with all upgrades #2 runes the
same. I bought a D-link router and have both computers on the internet I
also networked them together and enabled print sharing and file sharing. The
problem is when I turn off and restart either of the computers I lost the
printer and file sharing and the network. I have to install the network
each time I shut down either one of the computers. I do not lose the
internet connection though. Does anyone know how to stop this from
happening??? Please direct me to the right group if I am in the wrong place.
Thank you in advance
Buzz
The network is still going down but when I go to computer #2 and try the
network and it will not work I go back to computer #1
and disable Norton Internet Security and then go back to computer #2 the
network is working fine, print sharing and file sharing are
working. I can then go back to computer #1 and enable Norton Internet
Security and the network is still running on computer#2 Is there something
that can be done in Norton that will fix this problem???? Thank you all in
advance. I do not use Norton AnitVirus, I use AVG Pro.

Need more info:

1. "I also networked them together" I take it that this does NOT mean that
these machines are connected to each other in some manner in addition to
ethernet cables to the DLink router?

2. "when I turn off and restart either of the computers I lost the printer
and file sharing and the network" If this means only that both computers do
not show up in My Network Places, you may not have a problem at all:

The next time this happens, on one machine click Start/Run cmd ENTER.
Type ipconfig ENTER and write down the IP address of the computer. On the
other computer click Start/Run \\IPaddressYouWroteDown ENTER. What
happens?

If you get an Explorer window showing shares, then File and Printer sharing
is working. Browsing through My Network Places is a slow and clunky way to
share resources, especially on a 2 machine network. After restarting a
machine, you may have to wait several minutes before the browse list is
rebuilt. If you use static IPs, lmhosts files, and shortcuts, you would not
have to wait.

In the D-Link you should clone the MAC address to force the D-Link to assign
the same IP address to the same computer every time it logs on.
Set up a 'trusted' network in your firewall specifying what IP address is
'trusted'.

The answer here is right in front of you.

To get your network to work after a reboot, you MUST first disable the
Norton firewall.

Of course, after a reboot, Norton will automatically restart, thus disabling
your network, and then you disable it and the network works again. Internet
works fine but no local network.

See what I mean? You have to configure the Norton firewall with a trusted
zone( your local network IP addresses or subnet). I can't give you advise on
how this is done since I don't use this software. Try the Norton website or
use the help files built into Norton.

A better firewall IMHO is Zonealarm(free) from zonelabs.com- follow the free
download link
Much easier to configure and more robust in stopping outgoing
communication(spyware).

Trust me, there's nothing wrong with your network except the firewall. I
have seen this many times before.

Thank you TW, and everyone that helped me.
TW I did everything you said and the network is working just great NOW.
Thanks again. Am downloading Zone Alarm now.
