Which version of Windows XP does your computer have?
XP Professional lets you specify whether to use simple file sharing in
Folder Options > View.
XP Home Edition doesn't have that option. It always uses simple file
sharing.
In any case, the simple file sharing option doesn't determine whether
shared folders or printers are visible on a home network. Something
else is causing the problem. Make sure that any firewall program is
configured to allow access by other computers on the network. Note
that some antivirus programs have firewall components that must be
configured. An example is Norton Antivirus' "Internet Worm
Protection".
