I have two computers connected to a router through which they both get
internet access. I have tried to get them to see each other but I can't seem
to make it work. Both computers are running xp home. The strange thing about
this is that both of them are in the "MSHOME" network. Would someone please
tell me how to get them to see each other? When I go to My Network
Places/Entire Network/Mshome, I see only the computer I am at, not the other
one.

There are two rules to success in life
1) Never tell people everything you know

I have the same issue AFTER updating to SP2! I have my
Win XP Home desktop connected to cable and a Linksys
router (wireless). My laptop (Win XP Pro) has a Linksys
wireless adapter that sees the cable for Internet
access. Before SP2, I could share files between the 2
computers. Now, my 2 computers dont see each other or
shared files in My Network Places. I am able to ping
both computers with the laptop seeing the desktop but not
vice versa. That's the only way the laptop can get
access to the desktop's shared files. I ran network
setup again and again with no success. Is there anything
else I can try?

I do not have sp2 on either machine. I have sp1 on both. Why am I having
these problems and what can I do to fix it.

Steven,

You might be able to get help faster if you would post an original article, with
a descriptive and unique subject. Posting your problem under somebody else's
thread limits your possibilities, and makes it harder for those who can help to
find your posts.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer, to start.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Please provide adhoc browser view for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "net view >c:\netview.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\netview.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started.

Do either of the computers have a software firewall (ICF / WF, or third party)?
If so, you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139,
445 and UDP 137, 138, 445, by enabling the File and Printer Sharing exception,
and / or by identifying the other computers as present in the Local (Trusted)
zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of (network) browser, and
file sharing, problems.
