I have set up a network between my new computer (xphome) and my old
computer(98se). The hardware on both pc's and connections are ok and I have
run the setup wizard on both. The LAN connection is showing a fault and when
I click repair it states it 'cannot aquire a network address'. I have run a
net diagnostic tool and everything passed except 'WAN miniport (IP)' and
'DNSserver search order' which failed. I am way over my head on this and the
online KB solutions are endless so maybe someone has a clue?

How are the computers connected - are you using a cross-over cable? Just 2
computers, directly connected, no router? If so, "cannot acquire an address..."
may be normal.

Unfortunately, with a Windows 98 computer, you won't get transparent, easy
setup. With Windows XP, you likely got an IP address of 169.254.x.x. With
Windows 98, you probably got 0.0.0.0. You're going to have to manually set the
Windows 98 computer to another 169.254.n.n address.

If no help yet, provide "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can diagnose
the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:
