Hi,

Am trying to netwok a laptop and PC. I have set up the workgroup and can see
the links in 'local netwok'.

I can even open files from the Laptop but when I try and open the desktop
link from the laptop I get a username & pass dialogue box.

thanks,

On the desktop, run the Network Setup Wizard. That's often all that's
needed.

If that doesn't solve the problem, the solution depends on whether
simple file sharing is enabled or disabled.

In Windows XP Home Edition, simple file sharing is always enabled. In
Windows XP Professional, you can enable or disable it in My Computer |
Tools | Folder Options | View, by scrolling to the end of the list of
Advanced settings.

If simple file sharing is enabled:

1. Type this command in the Start | Run box to enable the Guest
account for network access:

net user guest /active:yes

2. Remove the network password from the Guest account:

a. Click Start | Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK:
c. Click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password.
e. Click OK without entering a new password.

If simple file sharing is disabled, create a user account on the
desktop with the same user name and password that you use to log onto
the laptop.
