I have a problem with a small two PC network, I have a XP Pro PC and a XP
Home PC. I have folders shared on both PCs the XP Home PC can connect to the
Pro and view the files. The Pro PC will not connect, in My Network Places the
Home PC appears but when I try to ping the Home PC from the Pro I get the
request timed out message. When I ping the Pro from the Home I get a reply,
there aren't any firewalls present to cause any problems. I'm not sure why I
can ping one PC on my network and get a reply but when pinging from the other
PC I get request timed out. I just need to be able to access the files I have
shared on each PC from one another. Thanks

Maybe there's a non-obvious firewall on the Home PC:

1. Some antivirus programs, such as Norton and PC-cillin have built-in
firewall functions.

2. Windows XP has a built-in firewall. Open the Network Connections
folder and see if it says "Firewalled" next to the LAN connection.

Does pinging the XP Home machine fail when you ping it by IP address,
by computer name, or both?

I know that Windows XP has a built in firewall and I have double checked
that it isn't on. I have double checked all the programs and there is none
that would have a built in firewall. When I ping the Home machine with both
the name and the IP I get requested timed out. I have tested the cable and
the router just to be certain and it all turns up good. This has really got
me bumfuzzled all settings are correct and I still can't reach the home PC
from the Pro. During the four years I have been networking PCs this is the
first that I have seen with such a problem.

Thanks for the reply.
