Networking problems when user connects to network

Yesterday I experienced a weird problem. The company I'm working with
have a couple of Windows 2000 PC's who logon on a Windows 2000 Server.
We us a 3Com switch which is connected to an Edimax Router. The Router
uses a xDSL connection. We experienced problems with the network
connection. We had difficulties reaching the server and using the
internet. We couldn't ping websites and ip-addresses and the web based
menu of the router couldn't be reached. Not even when we plugged a PC
directly in one of the ports of the router.

After a long time we discovered that these problems happened when one
of the users logged one the network with his laptop (Windows 2000).
Normally he uses this laptop at home. We then searched his laptop for
viruses and used other cables but none of this worked. Every time this
user was connected to the network we experienced the above mentioned
problems. Sometimes we could work for let's say 5 or 10 minutes but
after a while the problems started again.

Does anybody have a clue what this could be? This user is currently
using another PC to work on, but he really wants to connect his
laptop. I have already searched the newsgroups but haven't found any
new tips or hints that can point me into the right direction.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Regards,
Michelle Jensen

Thanks for your reply. There are 2 nics in the server, one of them is
disabled. The router runs the DHCP and our internet provider takes
care of the DNS.

Hi Michelle,

W2K-server is much happier when it is running DNS-server and DHCP. So
please, install it and configure it. The ISP-DNS-numbers should be put in
the tab Forwarders.
Add options 003, 006 and 015 in DHCP-server, Scope options.
All your troubles will soon be finished.
