I am joining the thread as I am having similar problems but not quite the
same. I have two Vista PCs plus one XP PC and two XP laptops on the network.
In networks I can see all the computers from all the other computers and from
the Vista machines I can access all the files as required on the XP machines
but when trying to access a file (eg C) on a vista machine from any of the
others including the other Vista machine I get a message box " not accessible
you may not have permission etc. Access is denied"
I have tried everything with sharing and firewalls. can anyone help?
Regards,
Terry

Try Network Magic. It worked for me. There's a free trial.

Bless you Paul!! I struggled for three days trying everything to get
my Vista and XP machines to see each other. I finally found this
newsgroup and the above that you posted way back in Nov. Network
Magic found that WICS had to be disabled in Vista and offered to do
so. It then walked me through file & printer sharing, and had many
other feature that I didn't need.

To sum it all up, your suggestion worked. The owner of our local
computer store was even impressed when I told him about disabling
WICS, because he had told me this morning it was ALMOST impossible to
get Vista & XP to work together! Thanks again! Hope this helps
anyone else that's having trouble.[/QUOTE]

Glad to have been of help. Hope this will be of benefit to others as
well. Glad you flagged this so I'd see it.

For the record: I have NO connection with NM's publisher.

Something EVERYBODY used to do when usenet was still being policed, at
least a little, by the "Inner Circle". I learned a lot from those
guys! Too bad everyone didn't. :)

Thank You! Thank You!

Why in the world Microsoft has started being backwards in their programming
is beyond me.

I had to come back and search for more information. These changes worked,
for about 30 minutes. Then my STUPID Vista did some kind of reset and locked
itself out of the network completely.

Are there any other suggestions? I do have the Vista Ultimate, if that
makes any difference.

Why is it so hard to do something so simple as a Home Network?
