Networking from two different locations

My friend would like to network our two computers together so we can share files but he lives in one city and i live in another how can i do this?

Since simple file sharing would expose shared files to your worst enemy as
well as your best friend, I suggest using VPN to create an encrypted
channel from one client PC to the host PC.

Alternatively, you could settle for shipping files back and forth as
email attachments.
