i need to network one computer (with win xp) to a printer on another computer
(with win 98). they are on the same workgroup, and i can access files on that
computer.

when i try 'add printer', it says it's there and i can even add it. but when
i try to printer something, the file just stays on the queue and nothing
happens, then eventually the status of the file goes to 'error' with no
explanation.

i heard the problem might be the win xp - win 98 compatibility. is that
true? please help. thanks

Win XP and Win 98 are fully compatible with each other for file and
printer sharing.

Make sure that there's only one network protocol installed Except in
unusual circumstances, that should be TCP/IP. Remove IPX/SPX and
NetBEUI if they're installed on either computer.

If that doesn't help, reset the configuration by:

1. Deleting the shared printer on Win XP.

2. Un-sharing the printer on Win 98.

3. Re-sharing the printer on Win 98.

4. Downloading the latest Win XP drivers from the printer
manufacturer's web site.

4. Adding the printer on Win XP and installing the latest Win XP
drivers.
