Can it be done. I have a bog standard motherboard that has all the
usuall refinements and an Ethernet port where I get the broad band
coming through. Now is it possible to plug the other end of the
Ethernet cable into the laptop from the PC and actually have a network
where I can share files.

PS that's the only reason that I need it to send a large amount of
media IE. music, video ,films, I would like not to spend money on
routers and such, and WiFi is not really that amazing for me right now.

You will need a Cat 5 crossover cable to do that. They are available at any
decent computer store.

Yes. No router, switch, or hub is required for a network of only two
computers.

However you can't use a standard ethernet cable; make sure you get one
that's called a "crossover" cable.

Depending on the length of the cable you need, your total cost should be
somewhere around $5 US.

Yes, if you use a crossover cable.

You will need a crossover ethernet cable and you will have to
reconfigure the network protocols so that TCP/IP uses a fixed i.p.
address or so that the IPX/SPX protocol is installed on both machines.

Using fixed i.p. addresses with tcp/ip is the preferred method and if
you do it that way you should use addresses in the 192.168.xxx.yyy
range such as 192.168.001.001 for one machine and 192.168.001.002 for
the second.

When you want to go onto the Internet you will have to switch back to
using DHCP to dynamically assign i.p. addresses.

A router would simplify the matter. I see that our local Staple
(Canada) has a D-Link router (wired) on sale for under $10 tomorrow
(Dec 26th - Boxing Day in Canada).

Good luck
