Networking a Mac (that has Windows xp64 installed) to a PC

I've got a mac with Windows XP 64 installed and i want to network it
to a PC with Windows XP 32.

I've bought a 'Sitecom' wired router and gone through the network
setup wizard on each... but i cant see the files on the other computer
(on both). The Sitecom people tell me it should work.

Any ideas on whats wrong/how I should do this/or what type of router i
should use?

Assuming not firewall turn on, can you ping each other by IP?

What do you mean by ping each other by IP? How do I do this?

By the way i cant find the ip of the mac running windows xp 64 - if i
type 'ipconfig' in the command manager it wont show anything, but this
mac isnt connected to the internet.

I've tried typing commands such as...

netsh interface ip show config
netsh int ip reset [log_file_name]

For 'netsh interface ip show config' I just get 'no more data is
available'.

I'm a complete beginner at this type of thing - what do i need to do
to start off here? How do i find/assign an ip to the mac (if thats
what i need to do)? I really need to get these networked.

Any help much appreciated!
