Networking 2 laptops

Guest

I am trying to connect 2 laptops together, one is a thinkpad running 2000 and
the other is a compaq armada running 98. I have connected them with a patch
or crossover cable throught the network ports but they can't see each other!
Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

First, which type of cable do you have? Patch or crossover? Patch won't
work, crossover will. Fix that and see if your problem is resolved.

Please provide ipconfig information FOR EACH computer, so we can
diagnose your problems.

Start - Run - "cmd" - Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the
command window. Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT
checked!, open file c:\ipconfig.txt, copy and paste entire contents into
your next post.

It then lists 2 other ethernet adapters with similar information. The 2
laptops can now see each other, but I can't see any folders. The compaq asks
for a password, which I can't define in 2000 and the thinkpad just can't see
anything. Thanks for looking though.

Try:

1. On both computers share a folder(s).

2. On the Win2k machine create a new user account with the same user name
and password used to log onto the Win98 machine. Log onto the win2k machine
using the new account. If you do not use a user name and password to log
onto the Win9x machine, create one.

3. Reboot both machines and logon.

4. If you still cannot access folders: On the Win9x machine, open a
command prompt and type: net stop browser ENTER, exit ENTER. On the Win2k
machine, open a command prompt and type: net stop browser ENTER then - net
start browser ENTER, exit ENTER. Wait 12 minutes and try to browse.
