Then don't mess with the onboard NIC any more. Go buy a PCI NIC and
install it. They cost under $20usd. You can disable the onboard one if
you want, but it isn't necessary.

If the Ethernet controller is properly installed and working, you can
share with other computers without running the Wizard. The default
network setting in XP should work fine, provided that you configure
any firewall program to allow access by other computers on the
network.

Here are the actions that the Wizard performs on a computer on a
typical home network, using a broadband router for Internet access:

1. Set the computer name, computer description, and workgroup name.

2. Enable these network components:

a. Client for Microsoft Networks
b. TCP/IP
c. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

3. Share any printers connected to the computer.

4. Create the "Shared Documents" folder if it doesn't exist.

5. Share the "Shared Documents" folder.

6. Configure the local area network connection to obtain an IP
address automatically.

Steve,

I've just re-installed XP Pro SP1 and it cannot see Ethernet controller,
i.e. I cannot connect to the Internet. My DSL modem and Wireless router work
normally, that's why I can send this message from my laptop. What should I do
to fix the problem on my desktop machine?

Thank you!

I'm assuming that you're not "Zackavious" and that your question has
no connection to the one that I answered above. Is that right?

Open Device Manager, look under Network Adapters, and see if the
Ethernet controller is listed and if there's a problem with it, e.g.
driver not installed. If that's the problem, download the driver on
the laptop, transfer it to the desktop, and install the driver.
