I have now successfully set up a network between my two pc's, one on WinXP
and the other on Win98SE.
My problem is I can transfer files from the laptop to the desktop on either
pc but I am denied access to the files when trying to transfer from the
desktop to the laptop
Help would be welcome

Make sure that the shared disks/folders on the laptop are configured
to allow write access by other computers.

Does your laptop have XP and is it a domain member?
Yes the laptop has XP . I have rather an unusual arrangement with both pc's
being connected to the internet via a simple connector. The only
disadvantage is that the desktop is switched on when I switch on the laptop.
I only have a cross over cable connecting both.
I'm not sure if I connected the laptop only whether I would get away
without a switch?

Yes I have allowed access to my files

Have you specifically allowed write access to the files? The default
is read only, and it would cause the problem that you're having.

If that doesn't help, please answer these questions so that other
people can understand the problem better:

1. Which version of Windows does the laptop run?

2. Which version of Windows does the desktop run?

3. What are you typing or clicking to try to transfer files from the
desktop to the laptop?

4. What exactly happens when you do it? What is the complete text of
the error message?

Do you login on W98 (desktop) under the same account which has a local Admin
rights on XP (laptop)? I re-phrase my question from the first reply: is this
your office laptop with XP Pro and a member of office domain or just retail
one with XP Pro/Home?
If I got you correctly, you use ICS on W98. This is an usual setup until you
buy a hardware router.

Both pc's are used in the home and XP is home version
Both use the same ISP and the same account
Your last sentance I assume you mean unusual and not usual
It is unusual but I found it worked for me. The only snag is the both pc's
have to be on at the same time.

You have found my problem and I have now corrected it. I had not tickrd the
box which allows alteration to files and when I did I could transfer files
easily.
Thank you so much.

You're welcome, Blair. I'm glad that my suggestion helped you solve
the problem. Thanks for reporting the result.

Now that you've allowed other computers to write to the shared disk,
be careful. If you connect from another computer and delete a file,
it won't go to the Recycle Bin on either computer. It will be gone.

I'm glad you told me that.
