Network Traffic

I disabled the automatic site link bridging to try to
reduce traffic between sites that are not suppose to be
replicating with each other. It seems that replication
is behaving itself. I am still seeing a lot of server-to-
server communication, though. Do you know of any other
reasons that Active Directory servers would have to talk
to each other so much. My NT 4 domain servers don't
behave this way. Let me know.

Tony,

There is a big difference in the way that WIN2000 AD replicates. For
example, AD replicates only the changed attribute of an object whereas WINNT
4.0 replicates the entire object.

Now, to your specific situation. We will need a bit of information before
we can really help you. I take it that we are talking about multiple Sites?
How is everything set up? Did you let the KCC take care of everything (
sans the Site Links and apparently the Site Link Bridges )? What type of
connections are we talking about?

Unless I am reading this incorrectly, there would be 'a lot' - and what does
this mean in your example? - of server-to-server replication. Intra-site
replication is what you are probably seeing. This would indicate that you
have several DCs in the Sites where you are seeing a lot of server-to-server
replication and that you are making a lot of changes. BTW - I ass/u/me that
when you used 'communication' you mean 'replication'. The Bridgehead Server
in each Site will be the DC responsible for the Inter-site replication. Is
it possible that there are a lot of changes going on and that the shear
number of changes is too much for one pass?

Any more details that you can provide would be nice. And, where are you
seeing this traffic? Network Monitor or someplace else?

HTH,

Cary
