I have 2 computers - 1 laptop, 1 desktop - both xp sp2. the desktop has 2
nic-s. the second nic is the gateway for my laptop. the problem is on the
laptop side. internet connection seems to work fine in safe mode - fast
pings, everything opens well etc - just like it should. but in normal mode,
there are huge ping times, sometimes even timed out. most of the pages don't
load at all, some load partially. same thing is with IE and FX. sometimes it
requires about 10 tries to start to load an URL. there was a problem earlier
with the elitebar malware, but i got rid of that one, but problems with
internet connectivity still appear. so i appreciate any help as i couldn't
find any such topic already on this newsgroup.

Mihkel,

Any time you report normal functionality under Safe Boot, and abnormal or slow
functionality under normal boot, malware is almost always the first possible
culprit.

When you say that you "got rid of" elitebar, how did you get rid of it? Can you
post a link to the thread where you got expert advice? A final scan of the
computer, using HijackThis, and expert advice, is ESSENTIAL when removing
malware.

Of course, any time you remove malware, LSP / Winsock corruption is always a
possibility.

thnx, Chuck

i did some search on winsocks and decided to uninstall all network devices
(IEEE1394, Ethernet and Wifi) and then reinstall them. that solved the
problem. but i still wish to understand what exactly caused it.
