network setup problem

I have a network that was set up between two desktops and worked fine. I am
now replacing on of the desktops with a laptop but can't get the network to
function correctly. The desktop and the laptop will connect to the internet
but not to each other.

after removing the bridge I tried pinging everything

from both computers I can ping Jennifer1 by name and IP, and the dhcp server
but when I try psiamobile or 192.168.1.103 it times out

It can not ping itself. It is brand new and has windows firewall.

the File & Printer Sharing exception is enabled, for the subnet only.

If that's not it, let's take a look at the static route table on both computers.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "route print >c:\route.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\route.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

Jennifer1 is running XP Home sp2, windows firewall exceptions has file and
printer sharing checked and all subnets are checked.

OK, start by running both "ipconfig /all" and "route print" for PSIAMOBILE, and
comparing the two. Is the ip address for PSIAMOBILE 192.168.1.102 (from the
router print above), or 192.168.1.103 (from the ipconfig last week)?

If that doesn't help, reboot PSIAMOBILE and try again.

Get that resolved, then ping PSIAMOBILE using the correct ip address.

Once PSIAMOBILE can be successfully pinged (from each computer), make sure the
browser service is running on JENNIFER1. Control Panel - Administrative Tools -
Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper,
services both show with Status = Started. Disable the browser service on
PSIAMOBILE.

Remember when you're working with My Workgroups (Network Neighborhood / My
Network Places), you're looking at output from the browser subsystem. Any
change you make in file sharing could take up to 52 minutes to show up in the
browser display - don't expect immediate changes.

If PSIAMOBILE can't ping itself successfully, by ip address, there is a problem
with either:
- Firewall.
- Network configuration.
- Network software.

You said for PSIAMOBILE that "Windows firewall is set for file and printer
sharing exception and all subnets are checked." Do you mean that all ports show
"Subnet" for scope?

You are behind a router, right? If so, disable WF.

We've looked at the ipconfig, and the static route table, all which looks good.
As long as you have the ip address issue resolved.

Let's see what we can learn from the browser - you did check that browser is
running on both computers?

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
