Network resource shortcuts

I have several shortcuts to different resources on the VPN, usually folders
on different computers. When I'm disconnected from the VPN and I want to do
anything with these shortcuts explorer just hangs until it figures out that
the computer is inaccesible. Often it doesn't even recover and I have to kill
it and restart it manually. What gives? Same thing happens if you create a
network shortcut and make a typo by accident...

Is there anything that can be done?

HELLO !!!
When you are disconnected from your VPN,stay away from those shortcuts.
Only when you are connected should you do anything to them.
The computer only does what you tell it to do.Why would you tell it to
look for something that isn't there???

What if I try to create a shortcut and i make a simple spelling mistake?
What is I'm suddenly disconnected? Why does the system become unstable? This
is the worst software design possible! I am an IT student and I have written
only a couple of simple network application and evem I can tell you that I
don't know a person who would make such a design flaw on purpose. This is an
obvious "bug" and it has been present in explorer since always. What would it
take to fix the bug? Windows is a multi-thread, multi-process system. A lag
in one procedure shouldn't hang the whole application. Networks are usually
really laggy, so people should have seen that comming. The user interface
should be in a separate thread than the network operations. You see that if
you use FTP in internet explorer. When the application reads data from the
socket it displays a flashlight animation. Why cant it be the same here?

Regards.
PS. If you tell me to use Linux instead, you can go **** yourself...

About Linux,I don't know you that well. I think it is a little harder
to network a Linux box with windows.I could be mistaken(it's happened a
lot lately....)
Well it seems you partly answered your own question"this is an obvious
bug and has been...since always." Try mapping drives to the folders and
unchecking the "connect on logon" box.
