Network problem - again

Hello,

Home network, 3 Windows XP Pro, one Windows 2000 Pro.
All connected to a DLink DIR-625 with cables.
Everything was working fine as late as yesterday.

Problem: One XP machine can no longer see any of the other machines in
Network Neighbourhood. The workgroup shows up but if I try to browse it I
get a message that the workgroup is not accessible.
I can ping the router and any computer from any other computer, and all
machines have cable Internet connection through the router.
On the problem machine I have a mapped network drive and it is still
working.
All computers have Virus/Internet Security software and their firewalls are
active. I have run virus and spyware checks and found nothing.
I have rechecked and determined that the network settings allow
access for all the computers on the LAN.
I have also checked the NIC for protocols and services and everything looks
OK.

I was using VPN to a server at our data center earlier today and when I
connect any other network connection is blocked until I disconnect. The VPN
terminated due to timeout.
Just to be sure I reconnected and disconnected. Problem still there. I even
rebooted the machine, still no luck.

Any comments and suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks Bob,

I entered net view on the command line and I get a listing of all the shares names.
No error messages.
Do you think some part of the Windows has been damaged?
The day before I noticed the network problem Explorer crashed, and it seems the computer has been very slow since then.

I can also map a drive on another computer by using administrative share, e.g \\Servername\E$\FolderName
Do you think there may be something wrong with the Windows module that provides the Network Neighborhood functionality?

If you can map the remote computer drive but not browse, it sounds like computer browsing issue. Any errors in the event viewer? Or this search result may help,

Thank you Bob,

I am afraid I am getting lost here. I really don't know much about networking.
I know what DCHP is and I have some idea what WINS and DNS are.
But I don't know much about computer browser, so I think that to get anything out of the articles you have provided links to I would have to do some reading about networks first.
It is convenient to be able to browse to a folder or file on another computer on the LAN, but I can use mapping instead.
Some day when I have time to spare I will read my book "Networking with Windows XP".

Thanks for the help.
